Commonly known as ‘sea cabbage’. Includes 30 species widely spread in the seas of the Northern Hemisphere. More often found in the northern Pacific regions. Here laminaria grows in real underwater forests. Laminaria grows extensively in the shelf waters of the Shantar Islands.

These algae are richer than most vegetables and forage grass in iodine, methionine, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins, thus they are used in food industry, as animal forage, and in medicine. Some species that have commercial use are cultivated in Russia and South Asian countries.
