Description.<\/strong>\u00a0Gray whales are 12 to 15 m long, and weigh 20 to 35 tons. They have massive short bodies with a low wavy dorsal ridge instead of a dorsal fin. They have V-shaped heads (when looking from above) and slightly budged foreheads. Their mouths are a little bowed upwards, and the jaws are almost the same in size. There is a distinct keel bump on the ventral side of the lower jaw. Their mammary slits are covered by 130 to 180 pairs of thick yellowish baleen plates up to 30 or 40 cm high with rough fringe. They have paired V-shaped blowholes. The pectoral fins and tail flukes are broad and sharp-pointed; the tail has a deep sloping dent in the middle along the edge. These whales are grayish brown with numerous lighter spots of various shapes created by ectoparasites. Gray whales\u2019 skin, especially their heads, is often covered with acorn shells.<\/p>

Status. Gray whales are common in the Far East. They are listed in the Red list of endangered species of Russia. Indigenous Chukchi population hunt them (in a limited manner) for their own needs.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Habitat and Behavior. Gray whales inhabit the coastal shallow waters. They come to the fresh water lagoons, where they safely dry during low tides. They tend to gather into groups of up to 3 individuals. They are very active and mobile. They often raise their heads and tails above water. They can jump out of the water almost vertically up and then fall back down practically flatly with a loud splash. Their blows are bushy and split in two, up to 3 or 4 m high. Gray whales are not afraid of boats and ships, and so they let humans come up close.<\/p>

Similar Species. When they are observed diving, sperm whales, bowheads and southern right whales may be mistaken for the gray whale. However, sperm whale do not come to shallow waters, and have dark tails with straight-cut edge. Right and bowhead whales have broader black tails with sharp pointed flukes, and their tail stems are smooth with no ridges on top.<\/p>

Learn more: Gray whales inhabit the northern Pacific and migrate regularly. There are two herds known: one in the region of the Sea of Okhotsk and Korea, the other \u2013 around Chukchi Peninsula and California. The former one spends winters and breeds in the waters of Korea and southern Japan; and in summer they feed in the Sea of Okhotsk, in the shelf waters of north-eastern Sakhalin. It is practically extinct due to excessive whaling. The latter one spends winters and breeds in the Gulf of California; and feed in summer in the Chukchi, Bering and Beaufort Seas, sometimes coming to the East Siberian Sea up to the Nolde Bay and to the east up to Point Barrow. Young whales spend summers further to the south, along the Koryak coast. This herd is bigger; it includes 26,000 individuals and gradually restores its numbers. One can find whales of both populations in the Russian waters.<\/p>

\u201cEven with all the messing around on the gray whales\u2019 part, all of the Polaris III crew fell in love with them; and so did I after coming there on Calypso. It is hard not to feel for these intelligent creatures: they attract us just like smart kids do, even for all of their occasional stubbornness. And you cannot even call the gray whale a beauty. Their bodies and mighty triangular tails are practically covered with pits, marks made by parasites. The parasites follow whales due to their migration patterns. In the warm southern waters the whales become encrusted with shells sometimes mistaken for shellfish, however, those are Cirripedia. They \u2018drill\u2019 the tender whale skin just as their relatives attach themselves to stones and rocks. When the whale reaches the colder Arctic waters, however, the parasites fall off. Birds also help removing the \u2018whale fleas\u2019. There are also other crescent shaped marks, probably left by lampreys.
