In the south-west of the harsh Sea of Okhotsk, away from the busy cities and town, there are islands of unimaginable beauty. Animals and birds living here do not fear humans; and the landscapes are intact and breathtaking. This place is called the Shantar Archipelago. It is known to experienced travelers as one of the most picturesque and isolated destinations in the world.<\/p>

The high cliff shores of fantastic shapes and shades are covered with woods. Sea eagles soar above the coastline. Bowhead whales wave their tails among the ice plates at sea and come so closely to the shore it is possible to hear them breathe. Seals lay on the stony banks. Bears take walks along the shores. Numerous waterfalls roar in the cliffs; and various fish splash loudly in the rivers trying to beat the rifts.<\/p>

The Shantar Islands have unique and fantastic cliff scenery, incredible climate and numerous rare species of animals and birds that can be observed from up close.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

They formed around ten thousand years ago when a section of the mountain ridge separated from the mainland. These are not just islands, they are mountains covered with woods and flooded by sea. The coastline is rough and peaked making the geological structure of the islands clearly visible. Effect the elements had on the cliffs and exposure of fancy stones make the scenery especially picturesque. Even scientists reluctant to use artistic language mention how the landscapes are incredible. Yury Efremov, a renowned physiographer, called them severe and mythical.<\/p>

Even experienced travelers will be surprised by this place when they see the natural arches, grottos, and peculiarly shaped giant capes resembling either people, or animals. Cone-shaped cliffs projecting out of the water \u2013 kekurs \u2013 look like stone idols. Some coastal cliffs are polished and shine, some are dented and sharp. Cozy sand bays make way for steep and sheer walls. Bare lifeless slopes suddenly change for green and lush ones. When the sun is out, jasper and marble in the cliffs sparkle white, orange, red and rose.<\/p>

The Shantar Triangle<\/strong><\/p>

The lowhill Shantar Archipelago has four major islands: Bolshoy Shantar Island, Feklistova Island, Malyy Shantar and Belichy Island, as well as several smaller islands. The archipelago lies between the Academy Bay and the Uda Gulf, and it is separated from the mainland by the Lindholm Strait and its own Shantar Sea. The islands never had permanent settlements due to their isolation and harsh climate.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Ivan Krusenstern, a renowned marine explorer, was excessively careful when passing by the islands in early 19th century: this region \u201cmay prove extremely dangerous to sailors at stormy nights or when fogs fall that are as often and long-lasting here as nowhere else in the Sea of Okhotsk\u201d.<\/p>

Nowadays one can reach the islands by helicopter, seaplane, ship or powered sea boat. The route is difficult and demanding; and the crew has to be experienced and tight-knit. The weather can change abruptly: fogs fall, storms begin. The coast is cliffy and indented; there are numerous reefs and sunken rocks, whereas the bays suitable for landing are scarce.<\/p>

A pilot chart for the Sea of Okhotsk contains a comprehensive entry: \u201cSailing conditions in the region of the Shantar Islands are extremely adverse due to strong tides, narrow straits, stormy winds that are usually sudden; fogs, ice and level bottom relief that makes it impossible to locate the exact position of the boat with certainty. When visibility is limited, sailing here comes at a great risk. Vessels not equipped with a radar set are not recommended to enter the region\u201d.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Even though the Sea of Okhotsk does not freeze over entirely, the amount of ice here brings it close to the arctic seas. Huge ice floes remain in the north-west Shantar region until autumn. They are excessively \u2018packed\u2019 here, and a cold water area where the cold water masses come to the surface slows the thawing and melting down and serves as the cause of the frequent fogs. Yury Efremov compared the Sea of Okhotsk to a \u2018bag of ice\u2019 that has its own internal bag that is even \u2018icier\u2019 (that is the Shantar Sea).<\/p>

It is interesting that the maps locate the Shantar Sea in a region to the south of the Feklistova Island and Bolshoy Shantar since it has its own specific hydrographic and atmospheric conditions that differs from the remaining areas within the Sea of Okhotsk. Nevertheless, experts believe it to be excessive to identify this region as a \u2018sea\u2019: given its size, it is more of a strait (the Shantar Sea is only slightly over 2000 square meters, and its borders can be clearly observed from each point within its perimeter). Still, if it is a sea, it is the smallest sea on Earth, even though its temper can be just as unpredictable as those of larger seas.<\/p>

Summer is Not Summery<\/strong><\/p>

The climate of the islands is typically marine and humid. Springs are short. Summers are cool and begin in mid-July. Due to specific ice formation regime around the islands the spring is a month \u2013 a month and a half late as compared to the mainland. August is the warmest month; the temperature reaches +12\u00b0C. Windchills and frosts occur all summer. Winters are relatively mild, the average January temperature is -21\u00b0\u0421. Autumns are marked with strong winds. The snow covers remains for about 200 days.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

There is a reason for Ivan Goncharov\u2019s outrage in Frigate \u201cPallada\u201d: \u201cWhat a climate! There is little to no summer: mornings are neither cold, nor warm, and evenings are practically freezing. Fogs are so thick you cannot see your own nose. Yesterday we had to fire the cannons and beat the drums so that the officers on the boats could find their way to the frigate. The winds are mostly fresh and cold; and it is never quiet, even though it is the middle of July!\u201d<\/p>

However, there is a beauty to the local elements: dark green waves with foam lines, show white ice packs, cliff silhouettes slowly manifesting through the fog above the water; and thousands of birds soaring up high above the islands. The scenery is mystical and eerie.<\/p>

Shantar storms are also magnificent. This is how the Grigory Fedoseev described the islands in his novella, In the Clutches of Jugdyr: \u201cEverything from the far away horizon to the nearest islands is boiling in melted silver. It hurts to look. Wild waves dash against the cliffs and break against the rocks. It is a continuous battle between two elements. Persistent cliffs are against the raging insatiable sea\u201d.<\/p>

Even though winters here are milder than on the mainland, strong winds make the climate almost extreme. Trees and withering bushes along the coast are crumpled, bent and cling to the ground. Larches take the most whimsical shapes, even though deeper to the islands\u2019 centers together with spruce it makes for majestic and graceful forests.<\/p>

Woods make way for the cedar trailing shrubs, alder groves and dwarf birch thickets on the slopes and capes going far into the sea. In many areas moss only grows hidden between the rocks. It is impressive how persistent these trees and mosses are in their fight against the winds and frosts. Not only do they survive, they stubbornly keep going down to the sea. It is especially incredible how the Shantar land, breaking free from snow and ice for just a couple of months, succeeds in \u2018blazing up\u2019 with numerous bright flowers during the short summer and gift a plethora of berries and mushrooms to its inhabitants.<\/p>

Wild beauty<\/strong><\/p>

The islands are a unique natural formation for the southern Sea of Okhotsk, having its own specific ecosystem. Biologists and botanists have their work cut out for them here. Rare bird species live and breed here; salmons come here to spawn. Marine fish, whales and other marine mammals gain weight, spawn and breed in the coastal waters. Numerous flocks of waterfowl come here to rest during their seasonal migration.<\/p>

A great number of animals and plants are listed in various Red Lists of endangered species. Among the plants are the following: Astrocodon expanses (a species of bellflower), Lychnis ajanensis (a species of the carnation family with delicate pink flowers), Rhodiola rosea (also known as golden root, a medicinal herb of the orpine family with small yellow flowers), Oxytropis trautvetteri and Oxytropis vassilczenkoi (locoweeds with violet flowers growing along the rocky slopes), Saxifraga sieversiana (a saxifrage with white flowers on top of thin branchy stems), Valeriana ajanensis (valerian with short stems and rose-lilac flower heads) and others.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The endangered animal species include such rare mammals as brown long-eared bats (of the Vespertilionidae family), gray whales, bowhead whales and North Pacific right whales. The islands are especially rich in rare birds, such as the whooper swans, western ospreys, northern goshawks, golden eagles, white-tailed eagles, Steller\u2019s sea eagles, gyrfalcons, peregrines, Siberian grouses, hooded cranes, spotted greenshanks, solitary snipes, murrelets, European eagle-owls, Blakiston\u2019s fish owls, Far Eastern curlews, and black storks. Of the rare fishes, the Kamchatkan rainbow trout is the Bolshoy Shantar isolated endemic.<\/p>

Colony-forming sea birds, such as auks, horned puffins, tufted puffins and sea gulls, build their nests here. They form flocks of 35 to 40 thousand individuals. There are several spotted seals\u2019 and bearded seals\u2019 haul-outs on the islands; brown bears, sables and ermines can also be found here. Numerous marine invertebrates inhabit the coastal waters, which, in addition to various algae, provides for a rich and diverse diet for the higher animals.<\/p>

In view of the particular value of the region, the entire archipelago together with the adjacent waters was pronounced the state nature reserve in 2013 (even though a little bit later than the environmentalists and researchers would have liked). The reserve has the area of 5155 square kilometers. Its staff is being formed; and trails are being routed.<\/p>

The First Guests of the Shantar Islands<\/strong><\/p>

The Nivkh (or Gilyak) people inhabiting these lands several hundred years ago were the first to discover the Shantar Islands. They referred to the islands as \u2018Kyvrmyph\u2019. They ventured out to the sea in small groups of the most experienced and brave hunters when the ice began to break. They hunted the seals and caught fish. Researchers believe they went as far as the Shantar Islands.
In 1740-s Russian Cossacks Yury Moskvitin, Vasily Poyarkov and Ivan Nagiba came to the Shantar Islands. A century later Prokopy Kozmin described the islands in details and mapped them in the course of a formidable expedition commissioned by the Russian-American Company.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In 1830-s Russians and Americans founded a temporary settlement on Bolshoy Shantar to cut the whales\u2019 meat and process the whale oil as part of that colonization and trade company. A few dozen American trappers lived there with their families. What is known about it is that it did not exist for a long time. A desolate cemetery, ruins of the rendering facility and rusty equipment \u2013 those are the remains of the settlement.<\/p>

These are sour pages of the Shantar history; it was the period of severe whale hunting by the American trappers allowed by the Russian government. Dozens and even hundreds of foreign whaling ships filled the Shantar waters in 1840\u20131860-s.\n\nIn the 20th century Soviet sealing and fishing companies actively operated in these and the adjacent waters. Crews even competed with each other as to which one would kill more seals or catch more fish. They were after whales, pinnipeds, and fish. They set their seasonal camps on Bolshoy Shantar and Feklistova Island. Those camps were shut down in the late 70-s.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After 1950-s a military outpost, a hydrometeorological station and a lighthouse on the Severny cape were built. In 1994 the military left the islands. Now only the researchers and professional travelers are the rare guests here.<\/p>

It became evident that the Shantar Islands are one of the richest regions of the northern Pacific in terms of bio resources and biodiversity; and as such, it requires state protection. Still, even now cases of poaching are recorded. Now that the region is a state reserve, there is hope that the security here will be better.<\/p>

Holy site<\/strong><\/p>

This is an unmanned territory; however, it is not godless. Fyodor Konyukhov together with a group of tourists built an Orthodox chapel dedicated to St. Nicolas, patron of travelers, prisoners and orphans, in the Pankov bay on Bolshoy Shantar in 2012. The famous traveler explained that his first voyage to the Shantar Islands inspired the construction. An orthodox chapel on the shore is a symbol of the Russian presence here; it is an outpost in the remote lands observed by foreign vessels passing by. And it is also a monument to the courage and strength of the pioneers, researchers, protectors and all who were lost to these unforgiving waters.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Fyodor Konyukhov admitted in an interview that he \u201cwanted to return there and pray in that chapel; because the Shantar Islands stay in one\u2019s heart. When we left there, we were on a brink of crying. We were thinking: Lord, let us see all of this once again. There was such beauty! You wake up in the morning to witness the fog floating over the sea, and the peaks and mountains were already clear and sunlit. Animals come close to you: orcas, seals, various birds\u2026 Every day we were building the chapel, orcas passed us by\u201d.<\/p>
